An SPGS program that provides you with the tools necessary to start your own business, service, or non-profit.

What is your dream? The School of Politics and Global Studies is launching a program to assist ASU students and recent graduates in creating their own business by providing information, mentoring, brainstorming and other suitable activities by qualified persons related to ASU.

Students and recent alumni can participate in the program through:

  • Group Zoom meetings, likely on a weekly schedule
  • One-on-one mentorship
  • Events focused on topics for starting your own business from scratch

The goal of this program is to provide encouragement, instruction and mentoring for self-employment for students or graduates interested in business or entrepreneurship.

Program Leadership

Herb Roskind is a faculty associate with the School of Politics and Global Studies who has taught Global Negotiations at ASU for over a decade. He has started five unique business from scratch with only an idea including: HoltraChem Inc., CalChor Inc., Carolina Nitrogen Inc., General Plastics Inc. and Technin Inc. Roskind has also assisted in student startups Micro Green Company and Coffee Company.

Roskind will lead the weekly group Zoom meetings as well as assist in the development and vision of this program.

Mentors

The School of Politics and Global Studies has a large group of alumni and stakeholders who have started their own businesses or nonprofits and/or have valuable business and organizational experience. The individuals below are available to students and recent alumni for mentorship opportunities. If you have interest in volunteering your time, please email spgs@asu.edu. Participation in this program does not require a financial gift.

Joseph Martinez owns a small business in Phoenix, AZ and consults on communication coaching and training for various organizations. With a background in the liberal arts, he worked as a writer and curator in the Middle East and Europe. He is now based in Arizona.

Alan Phan currently works at Bank of the West as a Business Systems Administrator in their Equipment Finance Division (EFD). He began his professional career by serving in the United States Marine Corps where he served as an Aviation Maintenance Administrator for F-18 Squadrons. Phan graduated ASU with his B.A. in Global Studies in 2016. In the following year he completed the Master of Global Management at Thunderbird School of Global Management

Jake Sharry is a leader with extensive operations and program/project management in an international context. He is currently an Operations Manager at an Amazon Robotics Fulfillment Center with eight years of experiences as a Logistics Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Sharry graduated from ASU in 2009 with his B.A. in Global Studies and a Concentration in East Asia.
