The family of Ross Rice established an award in his honor. Ross was the founding member of the Political Science, which at one time was part of ASU’s Department of History. Ross was for a long time the curator of the Carl Hayden papers in ASU’s Hayden Library, and just prior to Ross’s retirement, he completed an extensive biography of Carl Hayden, Arizona’s first U.S. congressman and first U.S. senator.
Each year, the Ross Rice Award shall be presented to the outstanding political science undergraduate that best combines academic excellence and outstanding service. For the purposes of this award, “service” may include, but is not limited to, community service, volunteer work and involvement in campus or departmental organizations.
The first Ross Rice Award was given in 1987. The first award using the amount available for spending from the endowment will be made in 2006-07. Initially, the Donor expects the amount available for spending to support one scholarship per year with an award of approximately $500. The Donor understands that over time the number of awards and the amount of each award may vary, at the discretion of the ASU Beneficiary. This award may be renewed, at the discretion of the Selection Committee in the Political Science, ASU Tempe campus. Financial need is not a factor in awarding this scholarship.
